A Chronological Study of Webster's Dictionaries

@@This paper has two purposes. The first is to make a rough sketch of Webster's life with special reference to the publications of his dictionaries. The second is to trace the chronology of his dictionaries, including not merely unabridged but also abridged and small-sized ones, which constituted the great tradition of Websterian dictionaries. And the third is to arrange them in a systematic way by providing a classificatory label to each Webster for the benefit of the researchers in the field of archaeological lexicography of American dictionaries.
