The Antedatings of Japanese Loanwords in English

   The purpose of this research is to ascertain and fix the first year of the appearance of Japanese loanwords in English literature, with special reference to those in the OED2 and its Additions. This research in which about 270 Japanese words are antedated is sure to contribute to the historical understanding of the cultural exchanges between western countries and Japan.
